When it was being dug up one man stated to hallucinate and see his dead brother. It was discovered when a strange signal started to broadcast from that location, on and off and in a changing pattern. It was found on earth buried under the Yucatan peninsula. No one knows where the black marker came from. This is clearly going to contain spoilers for every dead space game so I'm not gonna bother tagging them. hope it doesn't sound like a bunch of retarded bullshit. I just wish we knew whether the moon orbiting Tau Volantis was always there or if it came later on. Its equally likely to be any moon within a few light years considering the Black marker had been on Earth for millions of years. Granted, you'd think with such advance tech they would have figured out there's a giant chunk of rotting flesh inside the moon, so it might not be. Its probably in some sort of hybernation waiting for the human race to either evolve to a certain point or for the markers to start convergence before it comes back to "life". As for how the Black Marker got there? We have a moon guys.
Red (and yellow in DS2?) Markers can also converge but their result is likely the Hiveminds and Nexi, imperfect or incomplete moons.
I'm pretty sure only the Black Markers can start the full on Moon convergence.
The Black Marker needs the copies/Red Markers because alone it is not powerful enough to converge an entire planet full of life. I've read, watched, and played all the DS media except for Catalyst and I've come to think that the Black Marker functions exactly the same as the Red Markers (as read in Martyr) but its purpose is to peak the curiosity of the indigenous/created race making them study and want to copy it.
